Runners turn out for Heartbeat

Heartbeat 2k 2016

Close to 300 runners of all ages took part in the Heartbeat 2k and 1k fun runs at Avenham Park, Preston on Sunday 25th September 2016. This is our 4th annual fun run and this year was the biggest so far, raising over £1000 for the charity.

The team at EverybodyFit led the warm up before Heartbeat Fundraising Officer Mark started the race at 1pm. Runners then took on the course with our mascot, Cardiac Carl clapping and cheering them on at the finish.

We had some incredibly inspiring runners at the event too. Heartbeat member George, pictured below, took part for the second year in a row after suffering a severe stroke. Go George!

A special mention also needs to go to the patients from the amputee clinic at Watling Street Road and to Gina Briggs who completed both 2k & 1k routes after running both 10k & 5k routes at the Run Preston event that morning. We can’t thank everyone individually but all those who took part helped to create a fantastic day! We can’t wait for next year!

You can check out the highlights from the event below.

Our Sponsors

We’d also like to thank Petticoat Lane Fireplaces for sponsoring the medals for the event. You can find out more about them here. Also, thank you to the guys at Run Preston for helping us manage the registrations for the event.

Keep an eye out for next years date and all the latest news at Heartbeat by following us on Facebook here or on twitter here.

CORPUS CHRISTI CARDIO CLUB

CC new 1

Corpus Christi Cardio Club has been providing a follow-on exercise programme for patients from Heartbeat for over 20 years. It was formed in 1993 by a group of patients who wanted to continue their Heartbeat exercise after completing the 9 month rehabilitation programme. It had the further objective of being self-funding and able to support Heartbeat from any surplus funds.

world-heart-day

The club moved to Corpus Christi High School in 2000.

The club meets twice weekly from 5pm to 7pm using the gymnasium and specialist exercise facilities at the college. Table tennis is available from 5pm. The main cardio exercise session, led by qualified instructors runs from 5:45 to 6:30. This is a varied programme including general aerobics, step aerobics, machine work and toning work. After the exercise session, there is an opportunity to socialise with refreshments. The club also holds regular social events.

Although run independently by its members, the club supports the “Heartbeat” charity and in return benefits from the charity’s specialist medical facilities. Several of the club’s members have sat on the Heartbeat Board of Trustees, including the current Chairman of Heartbeat and his predecessor. It is recognised as a suitable “advanced” programme for people who have completed the NHS/Heartbeat initial rehabilitation programme. There is a defibrillator available and all members have the opportunity to have resuscitation training.

Tony Wilson, Chairman of Heartbeat Board of Trustees, who has been a club member since 2000 says: “We believe that the exercise level, the club atmosphere and the move from being a Heartbeat patient to a Heartbeat supporter is a valuable step forward, both physically and psychologically, in the rehabilitation process. It has been a key part of my recovery during my 18 years involvement with Heartbeat.”

Club Treasurer Alan Bollands says: “Less than half of all cardiac patients in the North West take advantage of the rehabilitation exercise programmes offered around the region. We would like to encourage more heart patients to join clubs like ours. That is why we are inviting people to get in touch or to drop in to any of our sessions to see if it would suit them.”

The club offers one month free trial membership.

For further information, call Tony Wilson on 01772 719713 or 07984133557 or drop in before any session at 5.30pm any Tuesday or Friday at St. Vincent’s Hall, Corpus Christi High School, St. Vincent’s Road, Fulwood.

Appeal for help with cash collections

Appeal for help with cash collections

This is an appeal to find volunteers in the community to help Heartbeat raise vital funds throughout 2017.

We have lots of collections booked in this year at local supermarkets.  We have a rota for each collection and ask volunteers to help out with one or two hour shifts to help man the collection. You can bring a friend, sit or stand.  If you are able to give an hour of your time this year Heartbeat would be very grateful.

In one hour we can raise anything up to £60, every penny counts.

Heartbeat needs to raise £800,000 to run the services this year alone.  We need your help and support to make this possible. Every penny and pound we raise will be put to good use.

Last year Heartbeat’s wonderful volunteers collected a whopping £7,577.71 as opposed to £7,016 in 2015.  If you have a local corner shop or business, why not ask if they would take one Heartbeat’s collection tins.  If you are able to spare any time to help with a store collection or could place one of our collection tins please contact Lynn (lynn.preston@heartbeat-nwcc.org.uk).
