EDUCATION...
We visit schools, adult groups, clubs,
associations and the workplace aiming to reduce the prevalence of
heart disease through education.
Volunteers speak about their experience as a heart patient. Their
stories will grab your attention! We aim to create an impact and
inspire people to put the knowledge they have into action. During
the presentation we discuss the main risk factors for heart disease
and how a healthy lifestyle can help to reduce the risk of future
heart problems. The importance of regular exercise, the benefits of
healthy eating and the harmful effects of smoking are
highlighted. We look at what can happen inside our coronary arteries
and how the wrong lifestyle choices could result in a heart attack.
With the children we move into
action with an exercise session to round off our visit. A healthy
lifestyle is not what we know it’s what we do!
If you would

Our Education Roadshow attends local fairs, fetes,
agricultural shows and adult groups at their leisure or workplace.
Here we also ask visitors to think about lifestyle choices and
possible effect on their
heart by completing our ‘lifestyle
assessment quiz’ which is just seven quick questions. We also offer
to calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index) and body fat percentage. If
you want to know more we can tell you if you are an apple or a pear!
These are not medical tests or procedures, just simple measures to
make you think about your health.
We focus on the major risk
factors for coronary heart disease, lack of exercise, poor diet and
smoking. Finding out some ‘facts and figures’ about your shape and
size is one way of encouraging people to think about their
lifestyle choices and take action if necessary. Our volunteers are
once more invaluable; their experience of a heart problem makes all
the information take on real meaning.
At all events you can find out more about Heartbeat,
our cardiac rehabilitation classes and other aspects of our
education service. There is no charge at the Roadshows but as we are
entirely self funding and rely on local support there will be the
opportunity to help us by joining
the Heartbeat Lottery or making a donation.
